Ever wonder what could be better than winning one bet? How about winning a carefully configured series of bets and seeing your payout go through the roof?

Parlay bets are a way to do exactly that. Parlays are wagers combining two or more bets like moneylines, Over/Unders or point spreads.

Gamblers love parlays because even though they’re less likely to win, when they do you’re guaranteed to win big. A parlay bet of two or more outcomes will always offer a higher payout than betting on each outcome individually. The caveat is that you must get all of the wagers correct to win the bet.

On this page we’ll explain everything you need to know to start betting parlays and reaping the rewards. We’ll tell you how parlays work, show you examples of parlays in action and explore how parlays work in all the major sports like NBA, NFL, MLB and NHL.

What is Parlay Betting?

Parlay bets, also known as accumulators or combo bets are individual wagers that combine two or more bets and require all of the outcomes to be correct.

From the bettors perspective, the parlay is enticing because you stand to win more than if you had made each bet individually (assuming each side’s toal betting amounts are equal).

A common parlay bet is to cover multiple games and bet the moneyline or point spread in each. If all your picks win, you win the parlay. If even one of them loses, you’re out of luck.

How Does Parlay Betting Work?

We know that parlays are when you combine more than one outcome into a single bet and you need to get every wager correct in order to win but how does that look in action and how does it affect your chances of winning the overall bet?

Let’s take a look at an example and do some quick math. In the following parlay bet, assume that the teams in each game have a roughly even, 50/50 chance of winning.

Most sportsbook offer a 2.6:1 payout on a two-game parlay. This means that a $100 bet that correctly predicts both outcomes pays you $260 ($160 of which is profit plus your initial $100 investment). If, instead, you bet $50 on each outcome separately, your winnings would be $50×2=$100 plus your initial $100 investment for a total of $200.

We can see clearly now that the parlay, at a payout ratio of 2.6:1, pays $60 more overall than the two individual bets.

While the payout is greater so is the risk. That’s why sportsbooks love taking parlays. If you don’t get it perfect, you lose. The greater the number of wagers you put into one ticket, the higher the chances of failure but the bigger the potential reward.

Examples of Parlay Bets

Sportsbooks and casinos use parlays to let combine the three general-bet forms of wagers into one bet. These include the moneyline, Over/Under, and point spreads.

For example, if you like the Braves at -1.5 (a point spread bet), the Nuggets and Clippers Under 198.5 (an Over/Under bet), and the Penguins to beat the Capitals (a moneyline bet), you can place this combo bet for as little or as much as you please.

Remember, once yo make this bet, you need all three results to be correct in order to win.

The maximum number of games you can combine on most sites is 15. That’s a potentially humongous payday and a true longshot.

Parlay Betting Rules

As mentioned above, you are allowed to wager across different kinds of bets and across sports, so long as they are independent events and not correlated. This is an important distinction to make: sportsbooks DO NOT allow correlated parlays.

Ok, but what is a correlated parlay?

A correlated parlay is when you try to bet on two events that directly relate to each other.

For example, if you think the Nuggets/Clippers game will be Under at halftime and Under at full time then you will need to make the wagers independently. This is because one accurate result is directly correlated to the next. If the game is grossly below or above the halftime line, it is extremely likely to remain as such for the full time line.

They will, however, let you bet on Over/Under and a winner in the same game as these are considered semi-correlations.

Another important rule to consider when placing parlay bets is that a tie outcome, or in some cases a null/void bet, will result in that event being removed from the wager and the parlay subsequently reverts to the next lowest value of games for the payout.

Example: A five game parlay with a tie/push/void result in one of the outcomes would then make the ticket a four-event parlay.

Do Parlay Bets Include the Spread?

Yes. Parlay bets, so long as they are not fully correlated, can include the spread if you choose to bet this way.

A point spread will make your wager more difficult as the bookmakers are experts at setting lines that often reflect the final outcome. As such, you may be very confident about who will win a game but if you play the spread you can still lose the bet if the winning team doesn’t win by enough points.

Standard Parlay Betting Payout Odds

The following is a guideline for how most sportsbook pay parlays. This is assuming the games are standard -110 payout outcomes and the wager placed is $100. Of course, variations to the favorite or underdog side will impact these payouts.

Number

Odds

Amount won

Payout

2 Team Parlay

13 to 5

$260

$360

3 Team Parlay

6.5 to 1

$650

$750

4 Team Parlay

13 to 1

$1,300

$1,400

5 Team Parlay

25 to 1

$2,500

$2,600

6 Team Parlay

50 to 1

$5,000

$5,100

7 Team Parlay

100 to 1

$10,000

$10,100

8 Team Parlay

180 to 1

$18,000

$18,100

9 Team Parlay

400 to 1

$40,000

$40,100

10 Team Parlay

825 to 1

$82,500

$82,600

11 Team Parlay

1500 to 1

$150,000

$150,000

Understanding fatigue can be useful for lots of bets but it’s msot frequently applied to game outcomes like money lines, point spreads or over/under, as well as individual player prop bets, like how many points a certain person will score.

When accessing how big a role fatigue will play, you can start by looking at the three main factors we mentioned above: schedule, amount of travel, and how much a player is being used. These three factors have the largest effect on the outcome of games and should therefore have the largest effetc on the bets you are placing.

Here will briefly talked about why the NBA and NHL are the most grueling sports that induce fatigue on their athletes, but here’s a closer look at how all four of the major leagues in North America are affected by fatigue and the specific ways it can help you betting.

Fatigue and Betting on NBA

As mentioned before, fatigue affects NBA players mainly based on the heavy travel schedule, the amount of playing time for star players and the amount of lower-body injuries suffered from the demanding nature of the game.

Largest NBA Factor: Injuries Affecting Star Players

Other than baseball, basketball teams rely most heavily on superstars for overall game performances. We’ve seen how players like LeBron James and Steph Curry can completely take over games.

What we’re also seeing is coaches starting to rest their star players more on back-to-back games. Kawhi Leonard of the Toronto Raptors is an example of one star who often doesn’t play in back-to-back games.

If you can predict when an influential player will be sitting out due to fatigue it can make a big difference to the game’s outcome.

Fatigue and Betting on NHL

For our money the NHL is the most grueling sport in North America in terms of fatigue. The physical nature of the game combined with a heavy travel schedul can be brutal for athletes.

Largest Factor: Playing Through Injuries

This is a common refrain in football but it might actually be more common in hockey. Many of these athletes grow up thinking that playing hurt makes them a warrior. That’s extremely true in hockey, especially during the playoffs.

Former NHLer Kevin Bieksa said in an interview that during the Stanley Cup playoffs, he would often play through injuries without telling management or the media.

Many NHLers have echoed those same sentiments. If you’re noticing a player in the NHL that isn’t playing up to snuff, that could often be because he’s playing hurt without telling anyone.

Fatigue and Betting in MLB

The MLB can be a bit deceiving when trying to determine how much fatigue factors into games. Although teams play more games than any other league in North America, it’s by far the least physically demanding physically.

Largest Factor: Innings Pitched for Starting Pitchers

The magiv number for the top starting pitcher seems to be 200 innings pitched per season. Usually, that number is reached over about 30-35 games.

When a starter starts to surpass that 200 inning per season mark, it is a sign of two things: Either that pitcher is extremely good or he’s being overplayed. There have been examples of managers who start to reduce playing time for their starters when they start reaching that threshold, in some cases the pitchers are completely shut down for the season.

Fatigue and Betting in NFL

Although the NFL has the shortes schedule of all major leagues in North America, the sport itself is arguably the most demanding. You could make the argument for NHL hockey being as demanding on a game-to-game basis, but it’s devinitely the NFL where most injuries occur.

That’s more of a sport factor than a fatigue factor, but there’s no doubt that a sport as physically demanding as football is exhausting for athletes.

Largest Factor: Injuries to Crucial, Non-star Players

Often, it’s injuries to non-star players that are the big difference-makers in the NFL. Sure, injuries to star quarterbacks, running backs and receivers makes a difference, but it’s injuries to the offensive lineman that tend to affect the outcome of games on a regular basis.

There are numerous examples of talented teams who have squandered opportunities because their offensive line couldn’t keep them in games. Bottom line? Make sure you check the injury report before making your bets on the NFL.

How Some Temas & Players Work to Combat Fatigue

We mentioned before the example of the Vancouver Canucks in the NHL. Former general manager Mike Gillis was one of the first managers in the league to publicly discuss his use of sleep doctors and other research.

Since the Canucks face more travel than most North American teams, they’re already at a disadvantage when it comes to fighting fatigue.

We’re seeing other professional sports teams find new ways to conquer fatigue too. The NBA’s Dallas Mavericks and the MLB’s Boston Red Sox are working to conquer fatigue by working with the bedding company, BedGear, to get their players top of the line custom-made pillows and bed gear.

Implications of Fatigue on Betting Odds

Some players are better at managing their fatigue than others and knowing who’s particularly good or bad at it can give you an edge. The challenge is that it’s tough to figure out who bounces back and who doesn’t.

Stories to trickle into the mainstream from time to time. One came from the Washington Post in 2017, when they told a story about how Washington Capitals forward T.J. Oshie uses an Accelerated Recovery Program (ARP) device. The machine is attached to the body via small patches, and then electrical currents are sent through the body.

According to the article, at least 75 NHL players currently use the device. Oshie, in particular, was signed to a contract in 2017 that many deemed an overpayment, but the winger was instrumental in helping the Washington Capitals win their first Stanley Cup in 2018.

The logic is simple with sports betting and fatigue: the more you immerse yourself into knowledge about athletes in a sport, the better your bets are likely to be. Playing fantasy sports is also a valuable tool for gaining insights into specific players.

The Bottom Line? Fatigue can play a factor in your bets

Understand fatigue can help you make better bets but there’s no secret formula that’s guaranteed to win every time.

Here are some of the main points that you should keep in mind when factoring in fatigue with your bets.

The physical nature of certain sports, heavier travel schedules or a coach overplaying an athlete are the main factors of fatigue in sports

The NBA and NHL are the msot grueling sports for fatigue since there is a decent mix of physicality and travel in both leagues

Although there are many different factors for fatigue, there are more pressing specifics of fatigue that sports bettors should know about, depending on the league they bet on.

Watch for teams playing back-to-back games, three games in four nights, etc

Certain players and teams do a better jobof handling fatigue than others, so pay attention for clues.

There are some exceptions where fatigue might not be a huge factor, such as against teams that are overly rested and possibly rusty.

Now that you have a better grasp on how fatigue might affect your bets, it is time to put your knowledge into action. If sports betting isn’t yet legalized in your state, sit tight and keep studying. Chances are good that it’s coming soon !

Good Luck !

To understand how fatigue can factor into sports betting, most of the research has been focused on major North American leagues such as the NFL, NBA, MLB and the NHL.

All of these leagues have different physical demands. However, it’s pretty obvious that some are a lot more demanding than others, especially over an entire season.

The NFL is arguably the most physically demanding sport on a game-to-game basis, but with only 16 regular season games it’s hard to consider it the most demanding overall. Major League Baseball plays the highest number of regular-season games during the season at 162 but it’s easily the least physically demanding each game.

Physicality and heavy schedules converge to make a perfect storm of fatigue in the NHL and NBA. Teams in both leagues play 82 games per season and both are physically demanding. Of the two, hockey is definitely the more physical game and the one that fatigue arguably plays the biggest role in.

How Fatigue Affects NHL Players

In the NBA, fatigue factors are certainly at play even if the sport isn’t as physically demanding as the NHL. For one, there are fewer NBA players that hit the court in a game (nearly half as many as the average NHL team). Second, the top NBA players are on the court for a lot longer per game.

While physical contact isn’t as brutal as the NHL it’s still an exhausting game. There’s a toll on the knees, hips, ankles joints, and overall stamina. Some of the most gruesome injuries we’ve seen in professional sports over the years have been from freak leg injuries from basketball players landing awkwardly on a jump. Gordon Hayward of the Boston Celtics comes to mind.

That being said, injuries still don’t play the same factor as they do in the NHL. In the 2018-19 season in the NBA, teams had lost 67 man-games to injury at the halfway point of the season. In the NHL, the average team had lost 104 man-games to injuries at the same point in the season.

The Travel Factor for NBA and NHL

As mentioned before, the NBA and the NHL are both two of the most travel-heavy leagues in all of sports. Even though the MLB plays twice as many games, the three-games series actually mean that pro baseball players travel less than athletes in the NHL and NBA.

Both the NHL and NBA have 41 road games in a season, with flights between every stop. The MLB has 82 road games, but if they travel on average once every three road games, then they actually fly from city to city less than 30 times per season.

There’s one other important thing to note about the tole travel plays in fatigue.

The West Coast Bias

It’s no secret to sports fans that in North America, eastern teams represent only about a quarter of the continent geographically. That means that teams out West are subjected to much longer travel schedules than their eastern counterparts.

That can be most grueling for some of the Canadian teams in the NHL, in particular. The Vancouver Canucks, Edmonton Oilers, and Calgary Flames tend to travel more miles than any other teams in North American professional sports.

Even teams in California are subjected to more travel than teams in the Northeastern corner of North America, where the population density is much greater. That’s something to pay attention to, especially deeper into the regular season.

Some teams, such as the Canucks, previously invested in having sleep doctors and sleep consultants to help work around the challenges of extra travel. Understanding how different teams deal with fatigue can pay off when deciding who to bet on.

Prop bets are often placed on individual statistics in a game such as the over/under on things like trikeouts in baseball, rebounds in the NBA, goals socred in hockey or touchdowns in football.

Look for teams who have been on lengthy road trips, players who are injured or players who are often overplayed by thier tams and bet the under on these stats.

Conversely, look to place bets on the over for teams or players who are facing tired opponents.

How Does Player Fatigue in Sports Work?

If you’ve played sports before, you know that fatigue can be a factor from game to game, quarter to quarter, and even shift to shift. If you’ve lost money on a bet that involved fatigue, you’re probably even more aware of how big a role it can play.

Here are the three main concepts to understand when it comes to player fatigue in sports.

How Physical is the Sport?

Fatigue can occur in any sport, but it’s no secret that the fatigue in a sport like golf doesn’t hit an athlete as hard as the physical fatigue of heavy contact sports.

Basketball and hockey are both really physical sports that tire players out. Other sports like football are definitely physical, but since they have big breaks between games, fatigue is less of a factor than leagues that play multiple games every week.

How Heavy is the Schedule?

Which athlete is more likely to recover from physical stress, the one that spends nearly every night on the road or one to who gets ample opportunity to rest up at home?

In certain sports, heavy schedules contribute to fatigue and the likelihood injuries. Leagues such as the NHL and the NBA have heavy travel schedules combined with a physically draining sport. Of course, the MLB is the mother of all regular-season schedules, but the nature of the sports, along with the fact that games are often played in series of three, means that the travel schedule isn’t as hard on MLB athletes as it is on NHL or NBA athletes.

Even though baseball isn’t asphysical, the heavy schedule can make fatigue a factor that affects hitting and putching.

How Much Time Has an Athlete Played?

Unless you talking about Superman (or Lebron James), every athlete will suffer from being ovverplayed by their coach.

The nature of every sport is different, but sports such as soccer, baseball, and hockey have really stepped up their game to learn more about how overplaying an athlete can lead to injuries, fatigue, and poor performance.

In baseball, tracking the innings of every individual pitcher is perfected down to a science. In hockey, more and more research is leading coaches to play their backup netminder with more regularity because starting goalies begin to break down physically when they play too much.

Exceptions for Fatigue in Sports Betting

There’s a line between fatigue and too much rest. When players have too much time off they can get rusty. Here are three examples where fatigue isn’t the defining factor in the matchup.

“Tired” Teams Against Well-rested Teams

Believe it or not, there can be an advantage to “tired” teams playing against teams that have had too much rest.

This tends to happen in the playoffs in the NBA and NHL, where a team with one week of rest could be facing a team with one day of rest. There is a common belief that if a team rests for too long, they could be rusty against a team that’s in the groove.

“Tired” Teams Playing Against Star Players Coming Back from Injury

Another area where fatigue could play a lesser role is when a “tired” team faces off against an opponent with a star player coming back from an injury. Even when athletes are healthy, it usually takes them time to get back up to game speed after being away for so long.

Pinpointing Teams That Handle Fatigue Well

It is easy enough to look at a schedule and find a tired team facing a team that’s more well-rested. What that doesn’t acount for are teams that do an outstanding job of handling fatigue

When you do find these teams (or individual players, as mentioned above), take a second look at who they might be facing, and consider whether fatigue is really a factor based on how the team or player in question manages fatigue.

When it comes to performance in sports, fatigue plays a big role. It can handicap a superstar player or cause an entire team to play way below its full ability. The good news? It can also pay off big when you’re making bets if you know what to look for?

When teams are coming off particularly grueling road trips or back to back schedules, fatigue can change the odds dramatically. There’s nothing worse than betting on a favourite to win only to see them sluggish and slow when the game starts.

If it’s happened to you, you know fatigue can cost the better team the game.

Fatigue and Betting at a Glance

If you don’t understand how it works, fatigue can cause big problems in yoru sports betting strategy. The goal of this article is to help you find ways to use fatigue to your advantage.

Here are some key concepts to keep in mind:

Fatigue negatively impactsa team’s performance.

Look for favourites who are suffering from fatigue and bet on the underdog.

Over-hyped favourites often get inflated odds meaning you get a bigger payout if there’s an upset.

When a coach benches a star player due to fatigue it can dramatically change the game’s outcome. Being able to predict if is a big edge.

Teams and players in the NHL and NBA are most affected by fatigue.

Fatigue is a factor in all major sports but in terms of gambling, it’s most useful for betting on the NHL and the NBA since they’re both really physical games with heavy schedules. Not only do teams play back to back games or three games in four days, they travel all over the country to do it.

Coaches and managers do their best to manage player and team fatigue and the oddsmakers definitely look out for it too. Even so, if you can understand the role fatigue plays and how specific teams and players react to it, you can use it get an edge on your bets.

How fatigued are the star players in a certain matchup? Are there fresh players ready to break out? Is there an underdog that could have an advantage because of fatigue? These are just a few examples of the questions you can ask concerning fatigue.

Tips and Strategies

Oddsmakers adjust their odds and lines to reflect the role they believe fatigue to be playing. If you can spot clues they’ve missed, like a star player who’s particularly affected by back to back games, for example, you can find an edge.

The most straightforward approach is to look at the schedules of each team leading up to the game. Here are some common schedule trends you can keep an eye out for before placing your bets.

As we mentioned before, fatigue is most important in the NBA and NHL but we’ll also outline a few spots where it can play a role in other leagues as well.

Games on Back to Back Nights

This doesn’t matter so much for MLB players since the game isn’t as physical and athletes are used to playing consecutive games

Back to back games do play a big factor in both NBA and NHL games

Don’t just bet blindly against teams playing on the second night of back to backs.

Consider the amount of travel between games, how emotionally draining the game previous game was and how fatigue might be affecting the other team.

Also, watch for who might be sittin gout on the second night of back to backs.

For the NHL, make sure to check who the starting goalie is and what his last game was like.

Three Games in Four Nights

This situation mainly applies to the NBA and NHL

Sometimes, playing three games in four nights can be even more tiring than back to back

Look for teams who are on lengthy road trips while also facing three games in four nights

Also, watch to see if the team playing its third game in four nights is also on the second night of back to backs. This is an especially grueling spot that can affect performance in a big way.

Five Games in Six Nights

Teams almost never play five games in six nights in the NHL or NBA so this is a situation that is most common in Major League Baseball.

When MLB teams start playing five games in six nights it can significantly affext their performance in a negative way.

Sometimes MLB teams even play six games in six nights on some occasions.

Everybody focuses on the favorites in Grand Slam tournaments, but this article is dedicated to the best Wimbledon 2023 sleepers. Here are some players who ahve the potential to upset the odds and win the tournament.

If you want more information about the big guns, you should check my traditional Wimbledon 2023 betting preview focused on the most likely winners. With that in mind, let’s turn our attention to dark horses that could go all the way.

Holger Rune

Odds to win: +2000

Age: 20

ATP Ranking: 6th

Everyone needs to take Holger Rune a lot more seriously. The 20-year-old prodigy from Denmark is tremendously talented and will only get better. With four singles titles in his young career (including the 2023 BMW Open), I expect Rune to continue his path to greatness.

Rune has also beaten some of the best players on earth, although he’s still relatively new to the big stage. He’s got victories over Novak Djokovic, Daniil Medvedev, Jannik Sinner and Casper Ruud!

Since his breakout performance at the 2022 French Open, Rune has continued to climb the ranks. Despite a few shortcomings over the past year, he’s still playing excellent tennis and has reached sixth in the ATP rankings (a personal best).

The main concern with Rune is that he’s yet to perform well in this tournament. He’s also never gotten past the first round of Wimbledon in his career. Could the young Danish prodigy change the narrative this year? I think he’ll be much better than expected, and a deep run is on the cards.

Audrey Rublev

Odds to win: +4000

Age: 25

ATP Ranking: 7th

Andrey Rublev has been criminally underrated during his entire career. The 25-year-old competitor from Russia has won 13 singles titles since 2017. He’s now one of my top sleepers for Wimbledon 2023 because of his tenacity and aggressiveness on the court.

In terms of recent form, Rublev has played pretty well throughout the year. He made it to the Australian Open quarterfinals and captured the Monte-Carlo Masters title. Rublev has also been winning matches because of his incredible forehand and consistency on every surface.

Here’s a statistic that you can’t ignore: Rublev ranks fifth in total aces so far in 2023. He knows how to get aggressive, and his energy is always high whenever he plays. Although Rublev also often experiences a lot of unforced errors, he still won’t make things easy for his opponents.

His style suits the grass courts of Wimbledon. If Rublev is at his best, he will be very hard to stop. The odds of +4000 for him to lift the title are way too high.

Nick Kyrgios

Odds to win: +1800

Age: 28

ATP Ranking: 31st

All the top tennis sportsbooks are declaring Nick Kyrgios a Wimbledon underdog as well. His recent form hasn’t been very stellar, and injuries have kept him off the court in 2023. However, when Kyrgios is at his best, he can beat anyone.

A persistent knee issue has prevented Kyrgios from participating in multiple tournaments in 2023. He was also in pain while competing in the Stuttgart Open and urged fans to be patient with his progress. Kyrgios lost to Wu Yibing in straight sets.

Let’s not forget about Kyrgios’ magical run at Wimbledon last year. It was the first Grand Slam final in which he competed during his career. Although Kyrgios lost to Novak Djokovic, he also defeated Rafael Nadal and Stefanos Tsitsipas to get there.

Is Kyrgios healthy enough to be mong all the viable Wimbledon 2023 sleepers? I think he’s going to do everything within his power to compete. The Australian star can be immense on grass, so the potential for a surprising charge is there.

Barbora Krejcikova

Odds to win: +2200

Age: 27

WTA Ranking: 12th

The former women’s French Open champion also enters Wimbledon as a true underdog in 2023. Barbora Krejcikova isn’t the most consistent player, but she’s a solid competitor capable of winning a Grand Slam. She’s also got six singles titles in her career.

Krejcikova also has victories over the top female players in 2023, including Aryna Sabalenka and Iga Swiatek. Furthermore, she won the Dubai Tennis Championships back in February, defeating the world number one in the final match.

Unfortunately, a poor showing at Roland-Garros in early June indicates a huge drop-off in Krejcikova’s form. She didn’t get past the first round, losing to Lesia Tsurenko in two sets.

You often see female players fail to meet the expectations in one Grand Slam, only to explode in the next. That’s what I expect from Krejcikova at Wimbledon 2023.

Petra Kvitova

Odds to win: +2500

Age: 33

WTA Ranking: 9th

Petra Kvitova hasn’t delivered the most consistent results in the last several years. However, the two-time Wimbledon champion recently won her biggest singles title since 2018. Kvitova was the Miami Open winner in early April, defeating Elena Rybakina in two sets.

Here’s what I like about Kvitova: she can be unstoppable when the momentum is on her side. The veteran has multiple Grand Slam titles in her career to prove that. She knows what it takes to win at the highest levels of pro tennis.

Kvitova also deserves a lot of recognition and praise for her accomplishments. She’s been among the best players of her generation, having captured 30 singles titles in her career. Her performance in Miami also proves that she’s still a true contender.

Getting back to championship form has been a struggle for Kvitova. She hasn’t won Wimbledon since 2014; her best finish since then was a fourth-round appearance in 2019. Could Kvitova snag another Grand Slam title? Yes, and her chances are higher than the odds suggest.

Whether you’re an experienced ace at betting on tennis or you’re brand new to the courts, you’ve officially stumbled on all of the information you could ever want or need on the subject and more.

The Most popular Tennis Bets

Contrary to popular belief, you can bet on a lot more aspects of a tennis match or tournament than just the winner of a match. The flexibility that comes with all of these options should be a welcomed sign to sports bettors. Yes, it’s more to learn, but it allows you to bet every one of your predictions and make sure that you are squeezing out every bit of profit from your predictions.

Remember, just because there are a bunch of different bet types available does not mean that you have to bet them all. In fact, if you decide you only want to bet on match winners, that’s totally fine. There are plenty of successful sports bettors that choose to follow the, “Keep it simple, stupid” (KISS) mantra, and it works out great for them.

Outright Winner Bets

An outright winner bet is sometimes refereed to as a “to win” bet. This bet is the simplest bet on the list and probably a great starting point if you are new to tennis betting. Think Nadal is going to win the next tournament? You can bet on him with an outright winner bet, and if he wins, you win! Before a major tournament you should be able to get betting odds on every person who is competing.

All of the players will almost pay out better than even money, meaning that if you bet $100, you will receive more than $100 in profit for a correct prediction. Usually, the heavier the favorite a player is, the less money you will get for a correct pick, the bigger the long shot, the more you will get if they pull off the big upset.

For example, the biggest favorites in a tennis tournament are usually somewhere between +200 and +400. This means that if a player is +200 and you bet $100, you would get $200 in profit if that player wins the tournament. The biggest underdogs can be found in the +10000 to +20000 range. If you were to bet $100 on a player who was +20000 and they won, you would get $20,000 in profit for that bet! Before you get all excited, realize how unlikely it is for someone like this to pull off such a massive upset. Not impossible, but HIGHLY unlikely.

In between those ranges fall all the other players for a tennis tournament. Remember, as we discussed in the strategy section, this creates an opportunity for you to bet on multiple players, especially if you don’t think the favorite is going to win.

Match Betting

A match bet is similar to an outright winner bet, except that instead of picking the winner of an entire tournament, you are picking the winner of an individual match. You’ll have the option of picking either of the players to win. Again, depending on the level of favorite or underdog the player is, the payout odds will be adjusted. The favorite will usually pay out less than even money, and the underdog will usually pay out better than even money, similar to the outright tournament winners above.

Remember to keep an eye on the payouts associated with the match you are interested in, as the lines will likely shift based on how the betting public is betting. This can create some great value opportunities if the betting public starts to bet too heavily in the wrong direction. As a spoiler, the betting public is not usually regarded as intelligent and has a tendency to move lines incorrectly quite a bit. This is where you pound, and this is how you make money betting on tennis.

Handicap Betting

Want to bet on a player, but you still think they are going to lose? If you think that a player is going to perform better than expected but is still going to lose, you’re going to want to look into handicap betting. Handicap betting is a lot like spread betting in other sports. It aims to spot a number of games to the underdog to give them a fair playing field. Ideally, if the line is set correctly, the player who performs better than their expectations will be the winning bet.

The handicap bet is completely independent of the outcome of the match. If you’re confused, that’s ok. Let’s look at an example that will clear things up.

Handicap 2-Way Games Won
> Player A -2.5
> Player B +2.5

What this is saying is that Player A is the favorite in this match. They assume that they are going to win by 2.5 games. As you might expect, this means that they think Player B is going to lose by 2.5 games. Whoever you bet on, as long as they outperform this prediction, you win your bet.

Now, we know you are wondering why it says half games (2.5 instead of 2 or 3) when you can’t win half games in tennis. This is to prevent ties. Basically, if Player A wins by three games (which is more than 2.5 games), bets on Player A would win. If Player A wins by only two games or less or loses (all less than 2.5 games), bets on Player B would win.

Remember, this has nothing to do with the outcome of the match, but only the games won. Let’s say the match goes three sets and the scores are 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 in favor of Player A. We add up the total games won, and we see that Player A won fifteen games and Player B won fourteen games. Player A won one more game than Player B. This means that even though Player A won the match, bets on Player B would win because Player B outperformed their prediction. They were supposed to lose by 2.5 games, and they only lost by one. Player A was supposed to win by 2.5 games, but they only won by one, meaning they underperformed their prediction.

This sort of betting can be applied to more than just games won. It can also be applied to the number of sets won in a particular match. You can also try your hand at 3-way handicap betting, which is exactly the same except you have the ability to bet on a tie in the number of games or sets won.

Over/ Under Betting

An over/under bet in tennis is a bet on how many sets the match will take to complete. As is customary with over/under bets, you aren’t required to pick a winner; you only have to pick the duration of the match correctly. In a three match format, you’ll have the option of betting over or under 2.5 sets.

What does this mean in simpler terms? You are either going to bet that the match ends in straight sets by taking the under 2.5 sets, or you are going to bet that the match takes three sets by betting the over 2.5 sets. Straight sets would be two sets, which is under 2.5. Three sets is, well, three sets, which is over 2.5 sets.

One thing that is different than some other sports you may have made over/under bets on is that the payout odds will be shifted some and will not pay out even money on both sides of the bet. If the match is predicted to end in straight sets, expect to get paid better if you correctly pick the over and vice versa.

Exact Score Betting

If you’re an absolute tennis wizard or someone who likes to make some higher variance bets, you’re going to love these exact score bets. These bets allow you to try and predict the exact score of each set or the exact number of sets won by each opponent. As you can imagine, this is probably pretty challenging. This means that you should expect a pretty healthy payday if you nail one of these bets.

We looked at some upcoming tennis matches, and the absolute worst you could get paid for a correct pick was +450, with some exact predictions paying as well as +15000 in the same match. Here’s how the bet looks. Let say that Player A and Player B are playing, and you want to make an exact score bet on the first set. For some reason, you think Player A is going to crush Player B and win 6-1. You can place an exact score bet on this, and if you are correct, you will win big. Remember, you have to be 100% correct, and you have to pick who the winner is as well. You can’t just pick 6-1 and then if either player wins 6-1, you win. You have to be precise.

The same goes for the exact set betting, though, it’s going to be a little easier for you to pick. In a three round match, you’ll only have four options to choose from — 2-0 and 2-1 for Player A and 2-0 or 2-1 for Player B.

Prop Bets

Tennis prop bets can be a fun and profitable way for you to make some money betting on the sport. Prop bets are wagers where the sportsbook proposes something to happen, and you bet on whether or not you think that is going to happen. Here are some examples of prop bets you might see in tennis:

Head-to-head matchups on which player will last the longest in a tournament

Will there be a tie-break in the match? Yes or No?

What round will player X be eliminated in?

Total games played in a match

As you can see, there are a lot of creative options here, and this is just a taste of what you’ll see offered at online sportsbooks. You will sometimes see a few of these prop bets made available at brick-and-mortar sportsbooks, but that is usually only for the biggest of tournaments, and even then, the options are limited. We aren’t trying to knock the brick-and-mortar establishment; they just don’t always have the resources and board space available to offer as many options as the online sportsbooks do.

How do these prop bets work? Simple! Let’s say that you want to bet on whether or not there will be a tie-break in the match you are watching. If you think there will be, you bet “Yes.” If you don’t think there will be, you bet “No.” If you’re right, you win! Payout odds will be adjusted based on the likelihood of the prop hitting, so make sure you take a minute to make sure the risk is worth the reward for your bet.

Prop bets can be a lot of fun and can really enhance the tennis betting experience. Just make sure that you are betting prop bets that require skill to predict (like the examples listed above) and nothing crazy and wild that is just gambling. You’ll know the difference when you see them.

A lot of bettors don’t like betting heavy underdogs on the moneyline. They equate the large potential payouts with a high amount of risk and a low chance of paying off and they look elsewhere – often with the heavy favourites.

In many cases that makes sense, there are usually good reasons why a team is a heavy underdog with little chance of winning the game. Sometimes, though, ignoring those heavy underdogs means you are just leaving serious profit potential on the table.

The power of heavy underdogs is easy to understand – they pay off so well that they don’t have to win very often to make a profit. A +200 underdog only has to win one-third of the time for your to break even, and at +300 the required winning rate is just 25 percent.

The problem, though, is that teams often aren’t capable of winning at a high enough rate to create a profit, so you slowly go broke by betting on them. The trick, then, is to be able to assess when a heavy underdog is a sound bet, and when it is not. Here are three situations where a heavy underdogs can be worth a closer look:

One-hyped favourites

Underdogs are more attractive the more value they offer – in other words, the bigger the gap between their chances of winning and the risk you are taking by making the bet.

One of the best ways to find value is when the public doesn’t give a team nearly enough credit. For underdogs that happens most often when the favorite is getting more attention when they deserved. I’m not suggesting that you should just blindly bet on the underdog every time the public enthusiastically and heavily backs a favorite.

What you can be reasonably sure of, though, is that when the public is heavily on a favorite then the books will adjust the odds accordingly to make that favorite less attractive to minimize their risk. When the favorite is less attractive then it would be in a normal circumstance, then it stands to reason that the odds for the underdog are going to be more attractive than they normally would be.

The better those odds are for the underdogs the easier it is for the underdogs to present value, and the better the chances you will find one worth betting.

Quietly favorable matchups

The odds are set primarily based on what the public perception of a game is expected to be. The public relies more on perceptions and obvious signs of performance than on subtleties. That means that it’s very possible that the public won’t take note of a matchup that is actually quite favorable for the underdogs.

For example, maybe an underdog in baseball is playing a far superior team, but they have been hitting left handed pitchers well as a team recently while the favorite has been struggling against lefties. If both teams is starting lefties then you could have an opportunity for value.

Or perhaps a football favorite has a very strong defense, but they have been less impressive when they have seen an option-oriented favorite like they will face in the game in question. The public likely wouldn’t clue into either situation, and that could make the underdogs more attractive than they should be.

Differences in motivation

If a game has a heavy favorite then chances are pretty good that if both teams were playing their absolute best then the favorite would win.

If you watch a lot of sports, though, then you know that teams sometimes don’t play anything close to their best game. Sometimes those games come as a total surprise – an unfortunate one if you have bet on them.
Other times, though, you can make a guess before the game starts that one team will be significantly more motivated than the other.

The most common example of this would be late in the season when the favorite has clinched a playoff spot or is all but certain to do so. They would definitely be favored – and probably significantly – if they were playing against a team at the bottom of the league. That cellar-dweller might be playing with a modified roster, though – using young players instead of their usual ones in an attempt to see where they are at for the next season.

Those young players could be playing at full intensity in an attempt to prove themselves and earn a job, and they could be especially motivated because they are playing against a good team.

If that enthusiasm is matched up against a playoff-bound team that has no real incentive to win the game, and which has no goal greater than staying healthy for the playoffs, then the underdog could have a better than expected chance of winning. That could mean that their line could be packed with value.

For too many years during my time as a sports betting enthusiast, I was making a crucial error whenever I took a “teaser” ticker during the NFL season. For folks who aren’t familiar with teaser bets, this clever method of wagering allows the bettor to tilt point spread and/or Over-Under totals in their own favor.

For example

If you liked the Miami Dolphins as (-3) favorites over the New York Jets, and the Under on a total of 49 points, backing a basic 6-point teaser would work as follows. By adjusting the spread 6 points in your favor, you’d now have Miami at (+3), while your total bet would now be Under 55 points.

Just like parlays, teasers must be linked together with two more sides and all sides must win (or at least push) to cash the ticket.

#1 The Wong Strategy is Moving Line Through Two “Key” Numbers

In the rough and tumble world of football handicapping, certain point spreads are considered to be much more important than others.

Please Note: These so-called “key” numbers are 3 and 7 because the overwhelming bulk of scoring plays on the gridiron will be either field goals (3 points) or touchdowns (7 points with a successful extra point). And as you might have noticed during your own experience betting football, most final scores are indeed decided by these key numbers (21-14, 31-28, etc.).

Sharp bettors and bookmakers alike have long known the inherent value of key numbers. Bettors hunt for the margins, pouncing on (-2.5/ -6.5) favourites or (+3.5/+7.5) underdogs, knowing that the extra half-point “hook” puts them on the right side of a key number.

Experienced oddsmakers will set a big game’s line right at the key number, then move it off slightly to attract equal action on both sides. OK then, now that you know how key numbers work, let’s dive into their relevancy to teasers within the Wong Strategy construct.

According to legendary game theory analyst Stanford Wong (more on him in a minute), 6-point teasers work best when the bettor moves a line through not one but two key numbers. That is to say, you’ll want to look for point spread where a 6-point adjustment moves the line through the 3 and the 7.

Thus, when you’re eyeing a favourite, you’ll need to start with a spread of (-7.5), (-8), or (-8.5). From there, sliding the line 6 points in your favor takes you through both key numbers, as shown below:

(-7.5) > (-7) > (-6.5) > (-6) > (-5.5) > (-5) > (-4.5) > (-4) > (-3.5) > (-3) > (-2.5) > (-2) > (-1.5)

(-8) > (-7.5) > (-7) > (-6.5) > (-6) > (-5.5) > (-5) > (-4.5) > (4) > (-3.5) > (-3) > (-2.5) > (-2)

(-8.5) > (-8) > (-7.5) > (-7) > (-6.5) > (-6) > (-5.5) > (-5) > (4.5) > (-4) > (-3.5) > (-3) > (-2.5)

The only opening lines on a favourite that work for Wong Strategy teasers are (-7.5), (-8) and (-8.5). When you choose to tease other spreads, such as (-6) or (-10), you simply can’t cross through both key numbers.

And according to Wong, this means the added “juice” of (-120) you pay for the privilege of a two-team, 6-point teaser just isn’t worth the trouble. Wong also uses the same guidelines for teasing dogs too, so you’ll by looking for starting spreads of (+1.5), (+2), and (+2.5) only.

From there, adding 6 points to your side moves you through the key numbers of 3 and 7.

#2 Wong Devised by a Math Whiz Who Pioneered Card Counting

Most longtime gambling fans have heard of Stanford Wong, and for a good reason…

Back in 1964: A Ph.D. student by the name of John Ferguson was immersed in the world of finance at Stanford University. Ferguson also had a penchant for blackjack, one driven by his suspicion that savvy players could gain an edge over the house.

Ferguson had devoured the first treatise on blackjack basic strategy, Edward O. Thorp’s “Beat the Dealer” (1962), and he was eager to expand on Thorp’s theories. Soon enough, Ferguson was ditching class and hitting Las Vegas casinos to try his hand at counting cards.

#3 Wong Turned His Gambling Acumen to Football Teasers in 2001

After “Professional Blackjack” made him a household name among the gambling set, Wong published a long lineup of strategy manuals running the gamut.

And in 2001, his “Sharp Sports Betting” became the first forum to explore an optimal strategy for teasers.

It was this book which first introduced bettors to the notion that cutting across both key numbers offered the highest level of expected value over the long run.

#4 So Powerful That Sportsbooks That Sportsbooks Were Forced to Worsen the Odds

In fact, the casinos were once again forced to contend with Wong’s insights. Before he taught Wong Strategy to the world, 6-point teasers using two sides were offered with a standard “vig” of (-110).

Please Note: But as the method proved to be highly effective, bookmakers responded by inflating the vig to (-120). These days, many online sportsbooks won’t even let you put together the type of sharp teasers Wong discovered.

And when they do, the bets come with strings attached, such as any side ending in a push causing the ticket to lose out altogether.

#5 Every NFL Team Sports Winning Record Part of 6-Point Teaser

According to Wong, his style of teaser betting should only be applied to the NFL – and not the college game.

This is based on a number of differences between the two sports, but Wong states that college football’s lack of parity and proliferation of double-digit point spreads are most important. Essentially, college football has too many terrible teams taking on titans laying lines like (-28), rendering Wong Strategy obsolete.

But in the NFL, on the other hand, the era of perpetual parity ensures that every team has a fighting chance on any given Sunday. Don’t take my word for it though, just check out the cover rate win/loss records for every NFL team – when included in a 6-point teaser – between 2018-2020:

(.553)

#6 High Over-Under Totals of 50 Points or More Aren’t Qualified

Buried in Wong’s analysis of two-team, 6-point teasers is an interesting nugget regarding Over-Under totals.

Basically: Wong advises bettors to avoid any game with a total of 50 points or higher – even when the point spread fits his stated parameters. Based on his research, Wong reveals that games tagged with 50+ point totals are inherently more unpredictable, as both teams are expected to score in bunches.

With that in mind, be sure to check out the total for any game you’re handicapping with Wong Strategy. The spreads can fit the bill, but unless the total is set at 49 points or lower, you won’t extract the same level of expected value.

#7 NFL’s schedule Doesn’t Serve Up a Ton of Wong Teaser Spots

Because bettors need a specific range of starting lines to construct a Wong Strategy teaser, you might not see very many on the slate from Sunday to Sunday.

When a “dry” week comes up: You don’t have much in the way of Wong teasers to work with, don’t panic. It can be all too tempting to simply try a two-team, 6-point teaser using non-Wong starting spreads, but you’re only doing the books a favor at that point.

Remember, the entire crux of Wong’s intrepid insights into teaser strategy stems from moving through both key numbers. Only getting through the 3 or 7, but not both, just isn’t good enough for Wong’s exacting standards.

Conclusion

When I first learned about the Wong Strategy for NFL teaser betting, sufficed to say it was a world-changing revelation. Before that, I was simply flying blind while constructing my weekly slate of teaser tickets.

Sometimes I’d have three or four sides linked together, and in others I wasn’t even moving through one key number, let alone both. All in all, I was just another “square” bettor who the sportsbooks feasted on all through the Fall football season.

The biggest trades in sports history have changed the fortunes of countless teams and bettors over the years, for better and for worse. Whether attitudes got in the way or salary concerns became insurmountable, these trades shook up the sporting landscape for years to come.

Here are the biggest trades in recent sporting history:

#6 Patrick Roy to Colorado Avalanche

Patrick Roy is widely regarded as one of the best NHL goaltenders of all time, with three Vezina Trophies, three Conn Smthe trophies, five Jennings trophies and four Stanley Cups to prove it.

But that didn’t stop Montreal Canadiens coach Mario Tremblay from humiliating Roy on December 2, 1995. As Roy’s former roommate and longtime foe, Tremblay opted to leave the superstar goalie in net for the entirety of a devastating 11-1 loss against the Detroit Red Wings.

The move was widely viewed as malicious considering NHL goaltenders are usually pulled quickly from lopsided games or rough starts. After the game, Roy definitively stated it was his “last game in Montreal.”

He was quickly traded to the Colorado Avalanche in a shockingly one-sided deal, who went on to win their first Stanley Cup months later.

#5 Alex Rodriguez to New York Yankees

A-Rod is a polarizing personality with outsized celebrity even for a professional athlete. But regardless of what you think of his vide, he was an absolute stud during the 2003 season.

When the Texas Rangers decided they could no longer stomach his salary requirements, A-Rod was fresh off winning his second Gold Glove and becoming the youngest player to hit 300 home runs. Oh year – he was also the reigning AL MVP.

After a marquee deal with the Boston Red Sox – to include Manny Ramirez and future star Jon Lester – was vetoed by the Player’s Association, A-Rod agreed to switch positions and play third base with the Yankees.

#4 Ricky Williams to New Orleans Saints

The Ricky Williams trade is a classic love story gone wrong. It’s one we’ve all seen before – overzealous suitor gives up everything in pursuit of a potential flame that just can’t return the favor.

Prior to the 1999 NFL Draft, New Orleans Saints coach Mike Ditka become enamored with star University of Texas running back Ricky Williams. Ditka became convinced that landing Williams was the key to the Saints’ future success, and he was willing to do whatever it took to select him in the upcoming draft.

The Washington Redskins decided to play matchmaker with a first-round, fifth-overall pick that delivered Williams to New Orleans. But the deal cost the Saints every remaining pick they had in the draft.

Williams ended up with a lackluster first season in which the Saints went 3-13. Ditka was fired, leaving his predecessors in the unfortunate position of having to spend $15 million and sign 27 free agents to make up for the lost draft picks.

#3 Kareem Abdul-Jabbar to Los Angeles Lakers

At 7’2”, Kareem was literally and figuratively an outsized figure by the time the Milwaukee Bucks traded him to the Lakers in 1975. Well-known as a gentleman, Kareem nonetheless found a way to express his frustrations in Milwaukee by the end of the 1974-1975 NBA season.

While he never took issue with team management or coaching staff, Kareem simply found his lifestyle incompatible with anything less than a major coastal metropolis. He insisted on a trade to Los Angeles or New York City, and the Lakers ultimately granted his wish in one of the biggest NBA trades in history.

The trade ushered in the “Showtime Era” of Lakers basketball, with Kareem at the helm collecting almost every NBA record in the book as the team secured five NBA Championships.

#2 Kevin Garnett to Boston Celtics

Kevin Garnett started and ended his NBA career with the Minnesota Timberwolves, but his only NBA Championship came the year he was traded to the Boston Celtics, ultimately leading them to the prize in 2008.

Garnett held the distinction of holding the longest tenure with any single NBA team at the time of the trade, having already played 12 seasons in Minnesota.

The deal for Garnett remains the most lopsided trade in NBA history, a 7-for-1 package that saw the Wolves pick up five players, cash considerations and two first-round draft picks. Of course, they also got Garnett back nearly a decade later.

#1 Wayne Gretzky to Los Angeles Kings

For casual fans, the name Wayne Gretzky is synonymous with hockey. Still widely considered the ‘greatest of all time’, the Canadian’s 1988 move to Los Angeles is credited with the sport’s popularity in the United States.

Gretzky had already spent a decade in Edmonton, transforming the way hockey was played across the league with a team-oriented, head-first strategy that remains dominant to this day. Just two hours after the Oilers won the 1988 Stanley Cup, Gretzky learned he would be traded for cash needed to cover the owner’s flailing other businesses.

The deal was a monster, with Kings giving up $15 million (more than $33 million today), two players, and three first-round draft picks. The move remains known simply as “The Trade” and it earned the ire of Canadians nationwide, who considered Gretzky a traitor despite the fact he never desired to leave Edmonton.

The Kings enjoyed a massive increase in fan interest as a result of The Trade, which set off an explosion of interest in hockey that allowed the league to expand across the American Sun Belt.
